Ibaraki
Prefecture
Ibaraki is developing around
three coastal areas: Tsukuba Science City, the Kashima Rinkai
Industrial Zone, and the Hitachi Naka district with its International
Harbour and Park City.
Municipalised in 1987, Tsukuba has come to be recognised throughout
the world for its scientific achievements.
Ibaraki is planning to create residential districts
where people can enjoy both the convenience of modern urban
life and the peacefulness of a rural community. In 1985 Tsukuba
hosted the International Science Exposition, attracting huge
numbers of visitors from throughout Japan and the world.
Mito, the capital city of Ibaraki, was one of the centres
of Japanese authority during the Tokugawa Era (17th to mid-19th
centuries) and was home to scholars, religious leaders, skilled
craftsmen and artisans.
A number of Japan's most important corporations are headquartered
in Kashima. Kashima, home of the J. League team the Kashima
Antlers, is a leading industrial and manufacturing base for
Japan's industrial enterprises.
The Ibaraki Prefectural Kashima Soccer Stadium, one of the most
innovative football complexes in Japan, is the first to employ
the cell system. The stadium will be expanded to a capacity
of 41,800 spectators in time for the 2002 FIFA World CupTM. |
