Miyagi
Prefecture
Miyagi Prefecture is situated in the middle
of the Tohoku region on the Pacific coast. Miyagi is connected
with Tokyo by the Tohoku Shinkansen (bullet train). The regional
airport has been expanded to handle direct flights to and
from cities throughout the world.
The capital of Miyagi Prefecture is the attractive city of
Sendai, home to one of the largest festivals in Japan. Each
August, the Tanabata Festival draws some two million spectators,
who come to see the city transformed with decorated bamboo
branches. The festival celebrates love and features colourful
banners with love poems in doorways.
Apart from the Tanabata Festival, Sendai is the cultural and industrial
centre of the Tohoku region. Home to eight universities, Sendai
is the 12th largest city in Japan with a population of 920,000.
The 17th century poet Basho speaks of the wonders of Miyagi
Prefecture in "The Narrow Road to Oku", an account of his
travels in the region. Also located in Miyagi is the island
of Matsushima. Matsushima Island is considered one of the
three great natural wonders of Japan.
Miyagi's landscape features a striking contrast between snowy
interior mountains and balmy seashore.
Construction of the 49,133-seat Miyagi Stadium in Sendai was completed
in March 2000.
