Niigata
Prefecture
Located in the middle of Japan along the coast of
the Japan Sea, Niigata is historically one of the most important
centres for land and sea transportation. Serving as a major
terminal, Niigata links the Japan Sea and the Pacific coasts
with the Jo-etsu Shinkansen (bullet train) and the Kan-etsu
Expressway.
Niigata is built around an environmentally aware community that
strives to preserve its natural heritage of clean water and
lush greenery. Niigata primarily generates most of its income
from tourism and agriculture. The prefecture is one of the
top tourist destinations in the country, and since it is blessed
with rich farmland, it is the top producer of rice in the
nation.
Since Niigata is a major international port and airport, it
has forged close ties to countries on the Asian mainland.
Boasting a population of 2,480,000, Niigata Prefecture has
become an international cultural community where creativity
and friendliness are admired, and where community spirit and
unity are given priority.
