Osaka
City
Osaka, its history dating back hundreds of years, is located near
the geographical centre of Japan. Over the years, the city
-- once known as "the city of waters" due to its many rivers
-- has developed into the main city of the western half of
the country and the third largest in Japan. It has a population
of nearly 2.5 million.
Osaka has prospered as a centre of free enterprise. Many affluent
businesses are based in the city and have laid the groundwork
for a modern urban infrastructure and rich cultural traditions.
Today, Osaka continues to actively promote this prosperous
tradition and the benefits of a happy, healthy lifestyle.
Osaka is developing into a truly international city of the
21st century through initiatives such as the new Kansai International
Airport. The city is presently undergoing an architectural
renaissance, with aims to becoming a centre for people, goods
and information from around the world. Osaka's role will be
essential not only in the development of the Kansai region,
but in the cultural and economic advancement of the entire
nation.
Renovations for Nagai Stadium were completed in 1996, and the 50,000-seat
stadium located in the city will be a site for the 2002 FIFA
World CupTM. |
