Yokohama
City
With 3.2 million residents, Yokohama is Japan's second
largest city after Tokyo, and is the modern day centre of
Kanagawa Prefecture, which adjoins Tokyo.
Due to its excellent transportation links, downtown Tokyo
and Haneda Airport are only 30 minutes away by car. The New
Tokyo International Airport (Narita) can be reached by rail
in 84 minutes.
Yokohama traditionally has been an international port, and to this
day, the city shows evidence of its heritage in the many old
Western-style buildings and cosmopolitan atmosphere. The city
is also forging ahead with what it calls the Minato Mirai
21 project. The project aims to transform the city into an
international, information-intensive, resident-friendly, 21st
century metropolis.
In 1192, Kamakura (just 15 kilometres south of Yokohama) was
the centre of Japan's government. And, although Kamakura no
longer enjoys that claim, the prefecture is amongst the most
vibrant in the nation.
Yokohama is the home of J. League team the Yokohama F. Marinos.
Construction of the 70,564-seat International Stadium Yokohama
was finished in October of 1997, it is the largest stadium
in the country.
